Girls in STEAM
To create a more diverse field, we work to engage as many girls as possible through a variety of activities. We have created a partnership with InspireHer that allows us to organize field trips to places such as Google, Shopify, Air traffic control centers, and more. We urge our female students to participate in programming competitions we host annually such as Hackergals and Girls Who Code. As well as participate in the Waterloo’s Programming 4 Girls competition. To show that STEAM and FIRST aren’t just for boys, we make a point of having female role models at every event we host or attend. As STEAM fields are very male-dominated, it’s important to us that girls get an opportunity to be involved early on, paving the way for future careers in the field. In 2020 we went to Girls in STEM Day at the Ontario Science Centre to reach even more girls, and two of our students dedicated time towards the first virtual GiSO (Girls in Stem Olympics) in 2021!
